MUNday Recap: Cerritos Preview, SOCOMUN Recap, and Rankings Review

by Emily on September 26, 2011

We post a MUNday Recap article every Monday that previews the upcoming conferences of the week, recaps the conferences from over the weekend, and share the latest news around the Model UN community. Plus don’t forget to check out our workshops for students and our workshops for teachers and parents!

Conference Previews

We just finished liveblogging at Santa Margarita’s SOCOMUN conference and we continue our high school tour theme of sustainable growth of Model UN programs by visiting other locally-hosted conferences. This weekend we’ll be at Cerritos High School Model United Nations (CHSMUN)!

South Orange County Model United Nations (SOCOMUN)

The South Orange County Model United Nations (SOCOMUN) conference is the first conference of the year in North America and over 1,000 novices and returners were eager to get started at the largest one-day conference in the world. At any first conference, there will always be some nervousness and uncertainty for freshmen and veterans alike. But SOCOMUN does a great job at easing those nerves — as do upperclassmen from many schools who served as student advisors. Check out our liveblog article of SOCOMUN here!

We got ready for the Model UN season this past week with Top 10 Weekends plus our kickoff article on the “How to Teach Model UN” series that’s aimed for high school teachers. We also posted up Preseason Rankings for both the high school and college circuits. We realize there are pros and cons of rankings — our purpose is really to ignite discussion among the community on the competition vs. education aspects of Model UN and on awards reform and transparency. But for now, here’s what we think about this year’s teams based mostly on last year’s results.
