Weekly Resolution – December 14

There is a lot of buzz this past week surrounding the results and delegate experiences from Mira Costa High School’s Los Angeles Invitational MUN (LAIMUN) novice conference, the Capistrano Valley High School MUN conference, the Stanford MUN Conference (SMUNC), the National MUN conference in DC (NMUN DC), and the Bonn MUN Conference in Germany.

Georgia College wins at NMUN DC

There are also two great opportunities available: the chance to bring Best Delegate to your school for a workshop, and staffing positions for UNA-USA’s Global Classrooms Conferences. Read the full article to find out more!

Conference Awards and Recaps

Santa Margarita wins 37 awards at LAIMUN and 22 at Capistrano Valley.  97 freshmen attended LAIMUN and thirty-seven delegates won awards for their superior efforts representing the countries of Cuba, France, Lebanon, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Tuvalu. A special congratulations to students Kendra Ritterhern, Ballinger Doyle, Nina Riegelsberger, AJ LaCilento, and Brady Lawson who received Best Delegate awards.

60 Santa Margarita Model UN students that attended the Capo Valley MUN conference and twenty-two delegates received awards Special recognition goes to students Ryan Moussavi, Jack Bobruk, Zach Mastrovich, Madi Weil, and Lucas Miller who won gavels for serving as the Best Delegate on their committee.

Fountain Valley High School shows off diplomacy at LAIMUN. Fountain Valley High School attended LAIMUN for the first time and represented Panama at the conference. This was their second conference of the year and they came away with one award. FVHS will be attending the Mission Viejo High School MUN Conference next.

Mira Costa is impressive, but there is still work to be done. Mira Costa High School has dominated the California competition so far this year, winning Best Delegation at the Edison High School MUN Conference and at UCLA’s BruinMUN. But the results leave room for improvement. “If we are going to be successful at Chicago or, let alone, New York we are going to need to kick it up at least two notches,” advisor Bob Timberlake said. Mira Costa also hosted the LAIMUN conference which was attended by 735 students.

Pacific Ridge takes home four awards at Stanford. Pacific Ridge School from San Diego, California traveled up to the Stanford Model United Nations conference and took home four awards. “We are so proud of all of our students who attended this year’s Stanford MUN Conference,” said advisor Liz Grossman. “What makes the Stanford MUN Conference so unique is its commitment to creative committees.”

Georgia College wins at NMUN DC. The team was making its NMUN DC debut by representing Japan and won a conference-high of 3 awards. “Attending the conference was an award in itself,” said Paul Danaj, president of the Georgia College MUN Club, “but to hear Georgia College called so many times at the award ceremony was outstanding and overwhelming.”

Bonn MUN a great experience for global citizens. Cal State Long Beach delegate Dina Al-Hayek reflects on her experience after attending the Bonn MUN Conference in Germany. She writes, “I realized life is not about commodities, material goods, or status and prestige I and my fellow delegates would gain by simply attending the conference. It is how connected or how self-reflecting you feel when you are in a certain place, especially when you are forced to interact with nature, strangers and a foreign language. Life is all about the experience.”
