The past year has been a challenge for billions of people around the world, and has affected countless communities across the globe. The international Model United Nations community, one based primarily around large in-person gatherings, has change drastically this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation has affected Model UN students and conferences worldwide, including the cancelation of many spring and fall Model UN conferences and the closure of many schools, putting an abrupt end to the Model UN semester, and leaving questions about how to run Model UN in the fall.
But the global Model UN community is incredibly strong, and the resulting changes have shown how committed students are to participating in Model UN. Leaders hosted conferences online for hundreds of students, clubs created their own final conferences in the spring to celebrate their accomplishments and graduating seniors, and programs like the Virtual MUN Institute allowed students to participate in Model UN during the summer.
