The 2016 Guide to Model UN Programs at the Top 100 American Universities

Princeton University

Princeton University

Are you applying to universities and hoping to continue doing Model UN at that level? This 2016 Guide to Model UN programs summarizes what is available at the Top 100 US News-ranked universities in the United States.

There are four things to note before diving into the list:

A. Travel Team opportunities: Most universities have a travel team that attends MUN conferences. However, it is important to note that there are informally two MUN college circuits in the US that lead to different MUN experiences, which this website has called the “World Division” and “National Division” in the past.

World Division characteristics: The teams attend an average of 5-6 conferences per year, are led by student Head Delegates, and are usually part of a larger MUN or international relations club. The conferences are hosted by universities, emphasize crisis committees, and are competitive in nature with limited individual awards and school delegation awards. The most prestigious conference is the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) with 3,000 delegates, and other in-circuit conferences include UPMUNC, ChoMUN, NCSC, as well as the Canadian McMUN.

National Division characteristics: The teams attend an average of 2-3 conferences per year, are usually led by Professors, and may be part of a MUN class. The conferences are hosted by non-profit organizations, emphasize traditional UN committees and are academic in nature with many country delegation awards. The most prestigious conference is the National Model United Nations (NMUN) with 5,000 delegates split between two conferences, and other in-circuit conferences include NMUN DC, AMUN, SRMUN, and MUNFW.

79 of the Top 100 US News universities participate in the World Division. Ten of the Top 100 US News universities participate in the National Division (Pepperdine, Villanova, Washington, Syracuse, BYU, TCU, Denver, Tulsa, Drexel, Loyola University Chicago). Six of the Top 100 universities participate in both circuits (UChicago, Florida, UCSD, UCSB, Minnesota, and Indiana). Two Boston-area universities (Northeastern and Brandeis) do MUN in addition to the Model NATO and Model Arab League circuits.

The Best Delegate college rankings that are referenced below only capture the team results from the World Division conferences. It does not represent the best college teams nationwide as many teams participate in the National Division.

B. Chairing opportunities: MUN programs that organize MUN conferences will give you opportunities to chair or staff conferences, which is an opportunity many high school students have yet to experience. Some organizations run conferences at the college, high school, and/or middle school levels, which provides multiple staffing opportunities. A few of the conferences are among the largest in the nation and therefore require a deep and talented staff pool — this list specifically points out those with 1,000+ high school delegates or 500+ college delegates.

C. MUN program quality does not necessarily correlate with US News ranking: Rice and Notre Dame are among the top 20 US News ranked universities, yet their MUN programs are only nascent. On the other hand, many universities ranked lower by the US News rankings have great MUN teams. For example in the World Division, US News ranked #82 Michigan State and #92 Florida State are consistently among the Top 25 teams in the Best Delegate college rankings. Similarly in the National Division, #82 Texas Christian and #92 Colorado are consistently among the Outstanding Delegations at NMUN.

D. Good MUN programs exist outside of research universities: Good MUN programs also exist at liberal arts colleges, state universities, community colleges, and other institutions of higher learning that are not categorized as research universities. In the World Division, the United States Military Academy at West Point, Claremont McKenna College, and Florida International University are three very different types of institutions that are consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the Best Delegate college rankings. Carleton, Colgate, Gordon College, Ithaca College, Middlebury, and Mount Holyoke are examples of liberal arts colleges that are usually in the top 50.

Success at the National Division is spread out among many types of institutions. State universities are most common among the Outstanding Delegation award winners at NMUN, including: Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Sacramento, Chico State, Dayton, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Hunter College, John Jay College, New Mexico State, St. Petersburg College, University of Texas at Dallas, and University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. NMUN Outstanding Delegations also include liberal arts colleges (Alma College, Patrick Henry College), private colleges (Cedarville University, University of New Haven), and community colleges (Irvine Valley College, Lone Star College, Riverside City College).
