I attended the 2nd annual Intermediate Invitational Model United Nations Conference hosted by Trabuco Hills High School MUN (THHSMUN) last Saturday. It was a small conference of about 100 middle school and high school freshmen delegates from 3 schools — RSM Intermediate, Mission Viejo, and Trabuco Hills, which are all part of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District — and featured 4 committees — Security Council, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, International Whaling Commission, and an “anachronistic” International Criminal Court simulation on the trial of Che Guevara. The conference was solid and well-run, with particular attention paid to such details as the format of the background guides and the production of name badges.
The conference was a win-win for all the schools involved. There are few middle school-level conferences in the area, so this conference gave students at RSM Intermediate a chance to do Model UN. Mission students were happy to have a nearby 1-day conference to attend. And the Trabuco students gained chairing and conference organizing experience, and the conference served as a fundraiser for their club. I though this served as a good example to other Model UN clubs thinking about starting their own conference.
Congratulations to all delegates, secretariat, advisors, and parents on a successful conference!
