About 2000 participants from over 60 countries congregated in Brussels today to kickstart the Harvard World Model United Nations 2014 Conference!
Best Delegate also has a small delegation in a way this year with 4 members (Rajat, Felipe, Melissa and Heena) attending the conference, and thus you can expect a daily liveblog article as well as live updates on our social media accounts of all the interesting anecdotes as and when they happen during the course of this conference.
The day began with a beginners and advanced ROP training session followed by another one for crisis , however several delegates were unable to attend these training sessions as registrations were still underway at the Bozar Hall and most of the delegates did not have their badges that were required for them to enter the Egmont Palace, one of the conference venues, where the training sessions were scheduled.
But the long queues at the registration were forgotten soon after entering the Bozar Hall once again for the opening ceremony which was exceptionally impressive with many delegates claiming to not have felt bored for even a full minute because of the engaging nature of the performances AND the speeches!
The opening ceremony saw the President of the European Council – Herman van Rompuy, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food – Oliver de Schutter and the Director of McKinsey and Company in Belgium-Ruben Verhoeven deliver keynote speeches.
But perhaps the most appreciated moment came next when everyone witnessed a mesmerising performance by Andrey and Maria Baranov playing the Violin and Piano respectively, a performance that earned the duo a standing ovation after each one of three pieces they played.
The opening ceremony concluded of course with the Secretary-General Grace Qi and President of the Host Team (MUN Society Belgium) Jens Wauters declaring the conference open! With the global village set to start in another hour, WorldMUN 2014 seems to be very promising, and everyone is really kicked about it!
