RUMUN Liveblog: Opening Ceremonies and Interviews with Franklin, Newark, and Syosset High Schools!

This week, Best Delegate is doing something never done before in Model UN history — liveblogging three conferences at the same time! We will be at the Rutgers Model UN Conference (RUMUN), the Brown University Simulation of the UN (BUSUN), and UCLA’s BruinMUN!

Today was the first day of RUMUN and I’m really enjoying the conference. Check out this video of opening ceremonies and interviews with Franklin High School, Newark High School, and Syosset High School (and one more high school but I didn’t catch the name — sorry! let me know which school in the comments):

I was surprised to learn that every committee topic is related to the conference theme — addressing the impact of the global financial crisis. Opening Ceremonies keynote speaker Manuel Montes, Chief of the United Nations Development Strategy and Policy Analysis Unit, spoke about the crisis’ impact on developing countries. After working on Wall Street, I’m curious to see how the RUMUN delegates approach such a large issue.

I also found out that RUMUN is applying Web 2.0 to Model UN — the conference features its own social network, ModelUN.com. It’s a way for delegates to communicate through RUMUN and beyond. It’s also a platform for an essay contest that the conference is running. Each school at RUMUN has its own profile.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the conference. Check Best Delegate throughout the week for more updates on RUMUN as well as BUSUN and BruinMUN!

Are you at RUMUN? Let us know what you think about the conference in the comments!
